Military Medal Cards
View the Military Medal CardsThe Military Medal was a gallantry medal which was awarded for “Bravery in the Field”. Instituted in 1916, but with retrospective application for gallantry going back to 1914, the medal was awarded to British Army and Imperial Forces Other Ranks and Non-Commissioned Officers.
Awards of the medal were recorded by War Office clerks from the schedules of awards submitted from the battlefields across Europe. As bars were awarded for subsequent gallant acts, or amendments made to names, units, ranks and numbers etc, so the cards were overwritten by the War Office clerks. The cards contain a wealth of information including annotations for replacement awards and enquiry dates.
Historic Records Limited is honoured to have been tasked with digitising and now publishing full colour copies of these original Military Medal cards; the first time that these cards have ever been published in colour, and the first time that both the obverse and reverse of the cards have been seen.

Military Medal enthusiasts and experts, Chris Bate and Howard Williamson rescued the Military Medal cards from destruction in 1997 and since that date have transcribed, stored and researched them. Now, with the digitisation and publication of these cards, they are offering medal enthusiasts and family historians the opportunity to buy the original cards. If you already own a Military Medal group, or if your family member was an MM recipient, what better addition than to add the man’s original index card to your collection?
It is important to note that as well as covering the First World War, which of course makes up the bulk of this collection, you will also find here awards to men who served in the North Russia campaign of 1918-1919, and other inter-war Military Medal awards covering the period up to September 1939.
